Terms of service
The rules for using Make Good Moves.
Effective September 28, 2026
Agreement to these terms
These Terms of Service are an agreement between you and Make Good Moves LLC, a Minnesota limited liability company. They govern your use of the Make Good Moves website, applications, and chess-training services (the “Service”). By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
If you use the Service through an app store or another platform, that platform’s applicable terms also apply. If you use the Service for an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind it to these terms.
Eligibility
The Service is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. You must be at least 13 to create an account. If the law where you live requires parental or guardian consent for you to use the Service, you may use it only with that consent.
Your account
You must provide accurate information, keep your sign-in credentials secure, and promptly notify us if you believe your account has been compromised. You are responsible for activity performed through your account. Usernames must not impersonate another person, violate another party’s rights, or contain unlawful or abusive material.
You may delete your account through Settings or our account-deletion page. Account deletion and our retention of irreversibly anonymized puzzle attempts are described in the Privacy Policy.
Permitted use
We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to use the Service for lawful chess training and entertainment, subject to these terms. You may not:
- break the law or infringe another person’s rights;
- harass others, impersonate someone, or submit harmful or deceptive material;
- interfere with the Service, bypass access controls, or probe it for vulnerabilities;
- use bots, scraping, or automated access that burdens the Service or extracts its content;
- reverse engineer the Service except where applicable law expressly permits it; or
- use the Service or its content to build or train a competing product or dataset without our written permission.
Chess training and ratings
Puzzle evaluations, suggested moves, ratings, explanations, and computer analysis are educational estimates. Chess engines and our classification systems can be incomplete or incorrect, and ratings may change as the Service learns from additional attempts. The Service does not guarantee improvement, tournament results, or the correctness of any position analysis.
Content and intellectual property
The Service’s software, design, branding, original explanations, selection, arrangement, and other original materials belong to Make Good Moves LLC or its licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. These terms do not transfer ownership of that material to you.
Some chess positions and source-game information come from open or public third-party databases, including Lichess. Those materials remain subject to their applicable licenses and terms. Make Good Moves is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Lichess.
If you submit notes, reports, feedback, or other content, you retain any ownership you have in it. You give Make Good Moves LLC a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, process, reproduce, and use that content only as reasonably necessary to operate, secure, support, and improve the Service. You represent that you have the rights needed to submit it.
Third-party services
The Service may rely on or link to third-party services, including hosting, authentication, app stores, chess databases, and analysis software. We do not control third-party services and are not responsible for their independent availability, content, or practices. Your use of them may be governed by separate terms and privacy policies.
Fees and future paid features
The Service does not currently offer paid subscriptions or in-app purchases. If we introduce paid features, we will disclose the price, billing period, renewal and cancellation terms, refund rules, and any applicable app-store terms before you purchase them. We will not charge you without your express authorization.
Changes, availability, and termination
We may add, change, suspend, or discontinue features, and the Service may occasionally be unavailable. We may restrict or terminate access when we reasonably believe an account violates these terms, threatens the Service or other users, creates legal risk, or must be restricted to comply with law. Where practical, we will provide notice and an opportunity to contact us.
You may stop using the Service at any time. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination—including ownership, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and dispute terms—will continue to apply.
Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” Make Good Moves LLC disclaims implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and uninterrupted or error-free operation. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain disclaimers, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits rights that cannot legally be waived.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Make Good Moves LLC and its members, officers, employees, contractors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, goodwill, or business opportunities arising from the Service. Our total liability for claims arising from the Service will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. These limits do not apply where prohibited by law.
Governing law and disputes
Minnesota law governs these terms, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Before filing a claim, you and Make Good Moves LLC agree to make a good-faith effort to resolve the dispute informally for 30 days after written notice. Any court proceeding that is not resolved informally will be brought in a state or federal court with jurisdiction in Minnesota, unless applicable consumer law gives you the right to bring it elsewhere.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the Service changes. We will post the revised terms here and update the effective date. If a change materially affects your rights, we will provide additional notice where reasonably practical. Your continued use after revised terms take effect means you accept them.
General terms
If a provision is unenforceable, it will be limited to the minimum extent necessary and the remaining provisions will remain effective. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not transfer these terms without our consent; we may transfer them as part of a merger, financing, reorganization, or sale of the Service. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and Make Good Moves LLC concerning the Service.
