Who operates this service

Make Good Moves LLC, a Minnesota limited liability company, operates the Make Good Moves website, applications, and chess-training services. In this policy, “Make Good Moves,” “we,” and “us” refer to Make Good Moves LLC.

Information we collect

Account information includes your Make Good Moves username, internal member number, account timestamps, and the authentication identifier needed to connect your account to Neon Auth. Neon Auth may process your email address, password credentials, sessions, and authentication-provider information. If you use Google sign-in, Google and Neon process the information necessary to authenticate you.

Training information may include puzzles and positions shown, moves, outcomes, scores, ratings, rating history, experience and progression, streaks, decision duration, hints, incorrect moves, selected themes, session completion, notes, reports, and timestamps.

We store a randomly generated installation identifier in local storage to understand whether the same installation returns and whether a training session leads to another session or account creation. Pending submissions, training state, display preferences, and authentication state may also be stored locally so the service can work reliably.

Our application analytics tables do not store IP addresses. Hosting, authentication, security, and network providers may process IP addresses, browser information, request details, and similar connection data in their operational logs.

How we use information

We use information to provide authentication and account features; calculate ratings, progress, and streaks; select and review training positions; save notes and reports; prevent duplicate submissions; troubleshoot and secure the service; measure whether training sessions are useful; and improve puzzle ratings and quality.

We do not sell personal information, serve behaviorally targeted advertising, or use a separate third-party advertising or analytics SDK.

Service providers

Netlify provides website hosting, serverless functions, delivery, and security services. Neon provides PostgreSQL database hosting and Neon Auth. Google provides authentication when you choose Google sign-in. These providers process information under their own terms and privacy practices while providing services to Make Good Moves.

Retention and account deletion

Account information and account-associated training information are kept while your account remains open and as needed to provide the service. You can initiate permanent deletion from Account Settings or from the public account-deletion page.

Deletion removes your authentication identity, username relationship, positive member record, ratings, progression, experience, streak, notes, reports, and associated training sessions. Account-specific settings and queued submissions are also removed from the browser that completes deletion.

Puzzle attempts and move records are retained indefinitely after deletion to support puzzle-rating calibration and quality analysis. Before retention, they are separated from the former account and assigned to a unique internal negative-numbered anonymous owner. Our records do not retain the mapping from that anonymous owner to the former username, authentication identity, or positive member number.

Security logs and backups maintained by service providers may persist for limited operational retention periods before automatic deletion or replacement. Information may also be retained when required by law, necessary to resolve disputes, or necessary to protect the service and users.

Your choices and rights

You may review account information in your profile, delete notes through the service, clear local storage through your browser or device, and delete your account. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or an explanation of how your information is handled. Contact us at the address above to make a request or if you cannot access the authenticated deletion flow. We may need to verify that the request concerns your account.

Children's privacy

Make Good Moves is a general-audience chess-training service and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. A child under 13 should not create an account. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it as appropriate.

Security and international processing

We use technical and organizational safeguards intended to protect account and training information, but no online service can guarantee absolute security. Information may be processed in the United States and other locations where our service providers operate.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service changes. We will revise the date above and provide additional notice when a change materially affects how personal information is handled.
